I bought this for a friend of mine who is a retired high school Chemistry teacher. I am also a hs Chem. teacher, so have a general knowledge about Chemistry. I was pleased as I started to browse the book, and found many of the initial molecules interesting and exciting. However, as I got more into the book, I was a little disappointed in the self-effacing turn it took. The author was featured in about 10 photos, and it I felt it turned into a bit of a self-promotion. I thought there would be a broader treatment of more commonly used molecules instead of what the author and his colleagues have done.

While the stories are interesting, the author makes every opportunity to insert his name and photo with each "great" person... not so subtully suggesting he is in the same category, and also needs to be awarded a Nobel Prize. It is obvious and overdone.
