"Recommended to all psychologists as an in-office resource." (Electric Review, March/April 2007)

From the Back Cover

Empathy is the process that allows us to share the feelings and emotions of others, in the absence of any direct emotional stimulation to the self. Humans can feel empathy for other people in a wide array of contexts: for basic emotions and sensation such as anger, fear, sadness, joy, pain and lust as well as for more complex emotions such as guilt, embarrassment and love. It has been proposed that, for most people, empathy is the process that prevents us doing harm to others.

Although empathy seems to be an automatic response of the brain to others’ emotional reactions, there are circumstances under which we do not share the same feeling as others.  Imagine, for example, that someone who does the same job as you is paid twice as much. In this case, that person might be very satisfied with their extra salary, but you would not share this satisfaction. This case illustrates the ubiquitous feeling of fairness and justice.

Our sense of fairness has also become the focus of modern economic theories. In contrast to the prominent self-interest hypothesis of classic economy assuming that all people are exclusively motivated by their self-interest, humans are also strongly motivated by other-regarding preferences such as the concern for fairness and reciprocity. The notion of fairness is not only crucial in personal interaction with others in the context of families, workplace or interactions with strangers, but also guides people’s behaviour in impersonal economic and political domains.

This book brings together work from a wide range of disciplines to explain processes underlying empathy and fairness. The expert contributors approach the topic of empathy and fairness from different viewpoints, namely those of social cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, evolutionary anthropology, economics and neuropathology. The result is an interdisciplinary and unitary framework focused on the neuronal, developmental, evolutionary and psychological basis of empathy and fairness. With its extensive discussions and the high calibre of the participants, this important new book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in this topic.

Subject Index.

The tone and content of this book, as well as the price, targets it at university libraries. (I got it through an inter-library loan from my local library.) But if you have some background in the topics being discussed, this is very worthwhile reading.

The book is the output of an international, multi-disciplinary symposium on empathy and fairness. The 12 papers presented run from cognitive neuroscience to anthropology to social psychology to economics to philosophy, presenting recent research and analysis in a particular specialty.

Because every academic discipline has its own terminology, this means, for example, that if you're into philosophy you probably won't be able to follow very well the discussions of brain anatomy. Conversely, if you know cognitive neuroscience but aren't familiar with John Rawls, you may have a similar problem. Still, the reader can get something out of many of the papers, some more than others depending on his own background.

Each paper is followed by a Q&A/discussion session among the sympsium participants.

The papers are:
Vittorio Gallese: Embodied simulation: from mirror neuron systems to interpersonal relations
Tania Singer: The neuronal basis of empathy and fairness
Marc Hauser: What's fair? The unconscious calculus of our moral faculty.
Josep Call and Keith Jensen: Chimpanzees may recognize motives and goals, but may not reckon on them
Nancy Eisenberg: Empathy-related responding and prosocial behavior
Paul A.M. Lange and others: A social interaction analysis of empathy and fairness

"Written by experienced practitioners in the field???" (Human Givens, January 2007)

??????recommended as a clear, upbeat, and positive set of modules for the psychological treatment of people suffering from a defined disorder.??? (Journal Of Mental Health, June 2007)
--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

"This volume is a ground-breaking first step in standardizing the psychosocial treatment of adults with ADHD." - Dr. Sam Goldstein, University of Utah

"I think it is a uniquely valuable guide to how psychological thinking and treatment can be helpful to adults with ADHD- I recommend it to all professionals taking on this work." -Professor Eric Taylor, Head of Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, King's College London Institute of Psychiatry

"What emerges from this perspective is clinical wisdom. I could see and fell both the patient and the therapy." -Margaret Weiss, Director of Research, ADHD Clinic, Children's and Women's Health Centre, Canada

There is increasing recognition of the prevalence of ADHD in adulthood, which is estimated to be around one percent in the general population.  These people have often experienced lifelong underachievement; they feel misunderstood and have not received the help they need.  Reflecting the growing awareness of this problem, ADHD in Adults provides a comprehensive account of the presentation of adulthood ADHD, its assessment and treatment.

Written by experienced practitioners in the field, the book introduces a cognitive behavioural model of ADHD from which the authors developed the Young-Bramham Programme.  This is a unique, modular framework for assessing and treating people with adulthood ADHD and associated problems using practical intervention techniques.  The book is accompanied by the Young-Bramham Programme Companion Website, www.wiley.com/go/adhdadults that provides downloadable materials for use by clients and therapists.

ADHD in Adults is invaluable reading for clinicians working with adult ADHD clients in many different settings including primary care, adult mental health, learning disability, forensic, neuropsychiatry and neuropsychology.  It will also be a useful self-help resource for ADHD clients, friends, family and supporters.

ADHD in Adults: A Psychological Guide to Practice

I purchased this book to get some deeper information about my favorite subject- ADHD. This book indeed fit my requirement for depth which means it is not for the casual reader of ADHD material. I am a healthcare professional who desires to begin a coaching practice in the future. These authors give excellent food for thought as well as specifics in counseling modalities.
By A. Schide
This book is indeed for the more advance and knowledgable, but its a book that all ADHD must have. Its written in a clear manner so even with ADHD one can follow it. It gives answers in depth and with true meaning. I have read a lot of books/articles, [...] on ADHD and this one without a doubt is the best. I'm sorry I did not find it earlier. I cannot encourage you to buy it enough. It has numerous explanations, strategies, diaries,... and its all divided into detailed steps so its easy to understand, follow and succed!
Its really amazing that this book is so important for ADHD people and their psiquiatrist, psicologist and coach! It really explains very well their 'cognitive-behavioural model'.
Its all about understanding the mind of the ADHD and how to go about it in the present and future, not so about medication. In comparison with the most popular books this is a real guide, indeed a bible!

Psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, counsellors and therapists are under growing pressure to develop ever more cost-efficient ways to provide effective, ethical and client-friendly therapy. These demands are met by cognitive therapy in groups. Michael Free has developed an effective, tried-and-tested course of group therapy for depression and other emotional disorders, which can be used and adapted by mental health professionals to meet the needs of a wide range of clients and treatment services.

This book is a complete manual for a 12-week program of group therapy based on the cognitive therapy of Beck, Ellis, and McMullin. It contains all the materials needed to conduct the group, including information sheets for referring agencies and prospective participants and suggestions for assessment. Each of the 12 therapy chapters contains guidelines for checking homework, fully scripted mini-lectures, exercises, specified homework, and also suggestions for dealing with problems that may arise in the session. An appendix contains masters for visual resources that can be directly photocopied, as can the handouts and forms for participants in the group therapy sessions. For the busy clinician, therapist or counsellor this book represents

  • a conceptually powerful approach to dealing with depression and emotional problems
  • a tested and well-developed group program, with full guidance on selecting participants and key aspects of the therapy process
  • materials and resources for the therapist and clients that can be directly copied or adapted
  • outcome evidence of effectiveness and descriptive materials for funding agencies and prospective clients
?This book is remarkable both for its clarity of theortical description and for the attention given to therapeutic details. These elements are efficiently and effectively combined in ways which will readily enable the reader to understand and implement the principles of cognitive therapy for depression as applied in a group format.? I'm a Korean psychiatrist. Recently, I have finished my translation draft on this book.
Just having this book will make you to treat the patients with depression, anxiety, or uncontrollable anger in group.
The book is, in fact, a complete script. So If there were a blind curtain between the therapist and patients, all you have to do would be that you just read the scritpt in the book as writen!!
I also think that this book will help lay persons correct their negative thoughts to a more adaptive and healthier ones, although it was written primarily for therapists.
