As a postdoctoral fellow, I came across this book at the recommendation of a supervisor. Clearly pre-licensure training is a time of many transitions and terminations from practica to internship to postdoctoral fellowship and finally on to licensure. Also, as someone involved cognitive behavioral clinical trial research, I am confronted with stricter (prospective) timelines for treatment.By J. Sutton
This book is a comprehensive look at practical, psychological, and legal aspects of termination. From its typology of termination variations and guide to the assessment of when termination is indicated, to its underscoring of the importance of consultation (and documentation), this guide offers several structural tips. On a more clinically practical level, discussions on stages of change and personality disorders and their impact on treatment and on termination issues are particularly helpful guides. Importantly, Chapter 7 gets at more of a provider's concerns with termination issues. Finally, the issues related to contracting and terminating supervisory relationships was the first treatment I had read on this topic.
One area that does not receive all that much attention is the complexity of emotions during termination of positive therapy experiences. Admittedly, the topic does receive some text, but to my mind the problem-centered and pragmatic orientation of the book (perhaps appropriately) limited discussion of processing clients' sadness/anger/sense of loss at termination despite reaching their goals.
Overall, a valuable resource for a problem-centered clinician. I read it cover to cover and it now sits on my clinical bookshelf.
All good things must come to an end, and so it is -- or should be -- with therapy. Ending a relationship is never easy, but ending therapy can be particularly sensitive, for both provider and client. I would bet that many people have done what I did as a client: just quietly disappear, and then feel slightly guilty for not ending things with courtesy, grace and strength. This book provides the permission, rationale and methodology for closing the door, with detailed summary points for applied practice in each chapter. Dr. Davis' book is both thorough and practical. The final chapter, a consumer's guide to ending therapy, is a valuable resource for clients who need to know how, why and when to end things. I hope Dr. Davis will eventually expand this very worthwhile chapter into its own book.By M. Mattia
