I have practiced adolescent psychiatry for 36 years and this is the most helpful book I have come across in many years. There is a wealth of very practical examples of what to do when faced with a patient that you can not quite put your finger on the diagnosis. Dividing the diagnosis of Autism Spectum Disorders by age group is a brilliant stroke that is enormously helpful. What may seem normal in an 8 year old, certainly may not seem normal in a 16 year old. Each "stage of life" is given it's own section as the issues can present quite differently given the age of the person. This is the first author I am aware of that specifically addresses the very difficult issues involved in diagnosing teens and especially older adults. Dr. Gallo clearly has a lot of experience in diagnosing autism and I find myself reaching for his book when I have questions about diagnosing someone with the disorder. It is an "up to the minute" book that will be very helpful to parents, educators and practicing professionals.By Jerry
An excellent read for the average person who seeks to understand autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Gallo has managed to explain a complex issue in a way that everyone can comprehend--not the usual, boring textbook of technical terms. This information, presented in an easy to read style, will be extremely helpful to families and friends trying to cope with these difficult issues.By TechPerson
