Dr. David Miller's entry into the Essentials series is yet another useful member of these Wiley texts. His `Essentials of School Neuropsychological Assessment' is an easy read, and does a solid job of merging the fields of pediatric neuroPsychology and school psychology via a working (doctoral or specialist level) school psychology bent.

The book features a solid theoretical and historical background for both these fields, with specific emphasis on understanding neuropsychological evaluation from an evidence-based treatment perspective. Of particular note is Dr. Miller's reference to the lack of utility of many clinical neuropsychology reports in an education setting. In specific, how this lack of external validity is often frustrating for the parent, school and - most importantly - detrimental in meeting the needs of the child.

Thus, the book reasons for school psychologists to develop expertise in neuropsychological assessment, and with it link this assessment type to day-to-day, educational planning. To elaborate, there is an entire chapter in `Essentials of School Neuropsychological Assessment' dedicated to determining when a referral is appropriate for neuropsychological assessment, noting that not every referral for special education is going to warrant this level of specialty evaluation and/or is practical (given the high case loads of most school psychologists).

Further, the author presents a number of excellent case examples to walk a practitioner through the entire assessment process. These case examples do wonders in fleshing out the theoretical underpinnings behind such assessments.
