In the last thirty years, there has been a tremendous growth in the academic inquiry to understand men in their experiences as men. This growth is largely due to growing awareness of the problems that people face in trying to understand what it means to be masculine. This text introduces students to the research, theories, and basic issues in the field of Men and Masculinities, highlighting debates about the definition, origin, and the crisis in masculinity. The author provides a framework for studying the field of masculinities incorporating feminist, social constructionist, and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Written in an accessible style, An Introduction to Masculinities provides personal anecdotes and contemporary examples to make the theoretical concepts relevant to students’ lives. The text also introduces students to leading contributors and experts whose work have informed the field. The author gives the reader a context and structure by which they can critically understand and evaluate information about men and masculinities.

This book is full of contemporary theories and research findings on men and masculinities. Though writing from a psychologist's perspective, this book is truely interdisciplinary. The words are clearly written and very readable. Several boxes on the Who's Who in the Men's Studies field may provide interesting context for the readers. The most significant strength is the emphasis on epistemological perspectives throughout the book. I especially like the part of the social constructionist view on masculinities. There is one weakness. The author uses three chapters to explore the "development" of masculinities from three epistemological stances (essentialist, psychological and social constructionist), and then uses three more chapters to explore the "crisis" of masculnities from the same three perspectives. I find this order/arrangement a bit redundant. If the same theory was grouped together, it would be more cohesive. Furthermore, I think the title of the book is better called "Introduction to Theories on Masculinities" to reflect precisely the book's emphasis on theories rather than specific issues (e.g., violence, sexuality, sports...etc). Overall, the book is the most inclusive and balanced overview on the topic of masculinities so far. It is very suitable for students in introductory men's studies courses, and for anyone who wish to expand their knowledge on the psychology of men.
