—J. Shep Jeffreys, EdD, FT, author of Helping Grieving People—When Tears Are Not Enough: A Handbook for Care Providers, Second Edition

This book about is written primarily for those counseling or support persons to someone, who experienced a one time trauma is appalling simplistic. The fact that it was written by two Ph.D.'s was disheartening to me. Any child over the age of 8, raised in a loving home which has taught empathy most likely has mastered at least half of the suggestions and concepts related in this book.

While others reviewing are educators or in counseling field; I have PTSD and had hoped that I would be given new tools to use for myself and those I counsel as a lay person. I found this book abysmally simplistic and only focused/applicable to those who have a stable life until tragedy strikes. Specifically, it approaches working with those having had a significant one-time trauma not a history of repeated trauma (which is very misleading when reading the publisher's excerpt, obviously an attempt to sell more copies?): "Primer on Posttraumatic Growth provides insight, depth, and treatment recommendations for both the clinicians who work with those who have experienced dramatic negative events in their lives and for other professionals who support victims of trauma and extreme stress". Did you catch "negative events -plural, here?! The book focuses on those who experienced injury, accidents, death of a loved one and even mentions 9-11 survivors, and please don't misunderstand my intention these are all worthy topics, however, there are a plethora of books on the market that cover these topics already.

It is as if to make up for the lack of meat, they quote study after study particularly the following individuals, whom they mention repeatedly: L. G. Calhoun, R. G. Tedeschi, C.L. Park, Stephen Joseph and P.A. Linley.
Mary Beth Werdel and Robert J. Wicks have collaboarted on a new book called "Posttraumatic Growth" which comes in a long line of books on this subject. Ten years ago the avergae person would say, "What is PTSD?" and was then followed with the inevitable question, "What happened?"

We learn from Werdel and Wise that it's more than one incident that creates PTSD. It can be the way one lives his life between incidents and them, particularly if we're dealing with delayed onset ptsd (and mostly we are) there are the triggers in day to day life that continue to intrude. This book discuses the way that growth can occur through the healing of trauma. Re-Congnition is the key to healing and the goal is to feel safe. Every step that occurs is to acheive these goals. This book, titled "a primer" is just that. It's the sort of book one should read before moving on to in depth study because this book (at 195 pages less the references and index) only touches on the subjects at hand. What we have in this book is a wonderful literature review for a doctoral dissertation. If you are a patient, clinican or the support person this is a wonderful place to start.

But it is only a start.

The work of Judith Herman and Lisa Najavits delve far depper than does this one. Judith Herman describes the disease and Lisa Najavits' "seeking Safety" is a clear, concise manual for teating not just PTSD but SUD as well, and those who are familiar with PTSD know that one of the strongest of the seven symptoms is self medication.

That said, "Posttraumatic Growth" is an important work for a number of reasons. A literature review is always valuable.
