Praise for
Understanding, Assessing, and Rehabilitating Juvenile Sexual Offenders, Second Edition

"The Second Edition of Understanding, Assessing, and Rehabilitating Juvenile Sexual Offenders showcases Phil Rich's experience and mastery of the research and clinical literature. In my view, this is an excellent therapy book and, like its predecessor, will help practitioners to work effectively and ethically with juvenile offenders. It is destined to become a classic."
—Tony Ward, PhD, DipClinPsy; Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand

"Phil Rich is considered one of the world's leading authorities on how best to understand, assess, and treat juvenile sexual offenders, and this Second Edition of his excellent text shows why he is held in such high regard. All theoreticians, researchers, and practitioners whose work brings them in contact with juvenile sexual offenders should definitely read this remarkable book."
—W. L. Marshall, OC, FRSC, PhD; Director, Rockwood Psychological Services, Ontario, Canada

"Phil Rich's book, Understanding, Assessing, and Rehabilitating Juvenile Sexual Offenders, Second Edition offers new and thought-provoking ideas, updates, and information, especially on developmental pathways. This book is one of the few publications on juvenile sexual offending that offers something new and revealing to the field."
—Robert E. Longo, LPC, NCC, ACS, BCIA-EEG, BCN; Serendipity Healing Arts, Lexington, North Carolina

"Phil Rich masterfully fills the gap in the juvenile sexual offender treatment literature with a book that is neither introductory nor narrowly specialized. Seasoned veterans will appreciate his thoughtful and studied approach. Newcomers will find this book a vital go-to resource."
—David Prescott, LICSW, Clinical Director, Becket Family of Services, Falmouth, Maine

"Mind-blowingly brilliant—Rich by name and rich in depth, detail, description, and debate. An instant classic, Understanding, Assessing, and Rehabilitating Juvenile Sexual Offenders, Second Edition is both comprehensive and challenging with its material and messages, yet reassuringly accessible and practical."
—Martin C. Calder, Calder Social Work Training and Consultancy, Leigh, Lancashire, UK

Understanding, Assessing and Rehabilitating Juvenile Sexual Offenders

This is a comprehensive book that covers the field from theory to application, and seems to have something useful, relevant, and well informed to say about many aspects of the work. It covers understanding the population, the development of the behavior, and evaluation and treatment. If you're in the field, occassionally work with juvenile sexual abusers, or have an interest in learning more, the book is a great resource.
By A Customer
This is a very thorough and useful book. I will admit I have yet to read the entire book cover to cover but I cannot even begin to estimate how many times I have referred to chapters, sections, concepts, etc. located within the book. I am impressed with how each chapter in the book is independent from the others. For instance, if you need to know about assessment you could easily read just that chapter and arm yourself with all the knowledge you need without even glancing at the other chapters. Of course this depends on your level of prior knowledge, experience, and expertise. If you know little about adolescent sex offenders or are just beginning your career in this field, reading the first few chapters will provide you with a wealth of knowledge. But if you are a veteran then each chapter will make sense in and of itself.

This book is well written, easy to understand, and comprehensive. I would strongly recommend it to anyone working in this field or even to someone who is considering this field but still has questions about the breadth of what this field encompasses. It will inform the reader!

Review

Phil Rich's book "Understanding, Assessing, and Rehabilitating Juvenile Sexual Offenders" about the assessment of adolescents who sexually abuse others, therapeutic intervention with this client group and rehabilitation, is a very comprehensive and readable piece of literature. The breadth of information provided in the book, combining current research and clinical practice, seems to make it an ideal manual for people starting out in the field of adolescent sexual abusers as well as for people working clinically with the client group but who have little access to current literature advocating new research findings.
Well-researched, Phil Rich critically reviews in Section I the current knowledge and research base on Juvenile Sexual Offenders. Section II, emphasises one of the most important topics when working with Juvenile Sex Offenders, that is, the assessment of risk and inherent difficulties in assessing risk of recidivism in juveniles who sexually abuse. Section II introduces the rationale, application and usefulness of Stetson's/Phil Rich's own Structured Clinical Assessment Tool. Finally, in Section III, the author approaches treatment and intervention with juvenile sexual abusers, providing a general overview of forensic mental health treatment from pharmacology to psychotherapy, and then more specific and offence-related work with the client group, advocating an eclectic as well as holistic approach to treatment and rehabilitation of the young offenders.
In sum, "Understanding, Assessing, and Rehabilitating Juvenile Sexual Offenders" is an enjoyable read, with the only critique being the use of the term "kids". Maybe this is an American versus British English thing, but it seems too colloquial a word for the nature of the book and the professional audience it is aimed at.

"...an essential resource for any professional working with juvenile sex offenders..." (Child Right, Jan/Feb 2004)

Review

"Understanding, Assessing, and Rehabilitating Juvenile Sexual Offenders by Phil Rich is by far one of the best books on the market addressing this highly specialized group of youth. The author addresses the spectrum of issues related to etiology, developmental issues, and origins of sexually abusive behavior, to the complexities of doing a comprehensive assessment on clients. The book also thoroughly addresses the treatment needs of these clients using "best practice." This book belongs on the shelf of all professionals and others who come in contact or work with adolescents with sexual behavior problems. The book is brilliant" —Robert E. Longo, MRC; LPC, Corporate Director of Special, Programming and Clinical Training, New Hope Treatment Centers, Summerville, South Carolina

"A balanced, thoughtful, well-documented and conceived text. Dr. Rich has spent many years as a practioner. Clearly, he has grasped the increasing complexity of managing and treating a diverse population engaged in sexually abusive behaviors. This book is a highly useful overview text that is ideal for the new professional wanting to understa nd this specialized field but belongs in the library of advanced practitioners as well." —Steven Bengis, Ed.D., L.C.S.W., Executive Director

New England Adolescent Research Institute, Inc. This book represents a landmark in our understanding of sexual behavior problems in children: Dr. Rich has integrated theories of child development and sexual aggression into a cohesive whole. From assessment to treatment, he offers clear explanations of theory followed by specific suggestions for practice. Understanding, Assessing, and Rehabilitation Juvenile Sexual Offenders is worth owning for the breadth and depth of the reference list alone, but there is so much more to it than that. Anyone who needs to understand this complex problem—administrators, clinicians, corrections professionals, and policy-makers alike—should own this book. —Craig Latham, Ph.D., Natick, Massachusetts

I have practiced adolescent psychiatry for 36 years and this is the most helpful book I have come across in many years. There is a wealth of very practical examples of what to do when faced with a patient that you can not quite put your finger on the diagnosis. Dividing the diagnosis of Autism Spectum Disorders by age group is a brilliant stroke that is enormously helpful. What may seem normal in an 8 year old, certainly may not seem normal in a 16 year old. Each "stage of life" is given it's own section as the issues can present quite differently given the age of the person. This is the first author I am aware of that specifically addresses the very difficult issues involved in diagnosing teens and especially older adults. Dr. Gallo clearly has a lot of experience in diagnosing autism and I find myself reaching for his book when I have questions about diagnosing someone with the disorder. It is an "up to the minute" book that will be very helpful to parents, educators and practicing professionals.
By Jerry
An excellent read for the average person who seeks to understand autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Gallo has managed to explain a complex issue in a way that everyone can comprehend--not the usual, boring textbook of technical terms. This information, presented in an easy to read style, will be extremely helpful to families and friends trying to cope with these difficult issues.
